Green Your Business Through Water Conservation

irrigationWater conservation is a good way to green your businesses, writes Dan Bulley, executive director of the Green Construction Institute in Water Technology magazine.

Businesses can conserve water through irrigation, sewage conveyance and fixtures. Businesses could capture rainwater for irrigation use, or choose native plants that do not require additional irrigation.

A good way to conserve water is to reduce the amount of potable water used for watering the grounds. Bulley recommends looking for opportunities to collect waste water, also known as “graywater,” for use.

Regency Centers, a grocery-anchored shopping center chain, says it will save 42 million gallons of water annually by using a water management system to monitor weather data and closely control outdoor irrigation.

The Center for Sustainable Innovation recently released a new tool to measure the ecological sustainability of an organization’s water use.

The Environmental Protection Agency recently recognized a collection of utilities, individuals, corporations, NGOs, and governments for contributions in reducing, reusing and recycling water.
