The jeans are certified to organic standards for both their organically grown cotton fibers, and their dye processing which meets the new Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) prohibiting the use of toxic dyes and finishing agents, including lead and phthalates.
“It was exciting to make jeans that are not only more environmentally friendly, but also fashion-forward and affordable,” said David Basson, president of Greensource.
Brands continued to expand their organic programs in 2008, and demand for organic cotton fiber increased 33 percent or about 77,000 metric tons compared with the previous year, according to the Organic Exchange. But there is concern that inventories are still too high and could grow in 2009.
Last year, Target Corp. introduced its first line of eco-friendly apparel at luxury retailer Barneys New York.
