UK Plans “Sustainable Makeover” for Every British Home

uk-energy-savingThe UK announced plans for a “sustainable makeover” for each of the nation’s 27 million homes, Bloomberg reports.

The proposal announced by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, aims to save energy and money while reducing CO2 emissions.

British utilities, local government, and other businesses will fund insulation and solar panel installation for UK homes. The improvements will then be repaid through utility bills. The hope is to provide homeowners with large energy bill savings immediately, while stretching out the payments for the improvements over 7 or 8 years.

The government plans to tackle 7 million homes by 2020, and the other 20 million by 2030, on the way to achieving a national goal of 80% CO2 reduction from 1990 levels by 2050.  British homes are responsible for about 27% of the country’s greenhouse gases.
