Denver’s Metro Taxi Reusing Spent Oil to Heat Building

denvermetrotaxi2In addition to using hybrid vehicles for some of its taxis, Denver’s Metro Taxi now is reusing spent oil from its vehicles to heat its building.

With about 500 taxis, Metro Taxi converts about 500 gallons of used oil monthly into heat through a Clean Burn generator, according to a press release.

In addition to recycling used-oil from taxis, Metro Taxi also runs a company-wide recycling program, uses wind energy and is considering solar power, according to the release.

The Toyota Prius comprises a small portion of Metro Taxi’s vehicles. Metro Taxi has publicly stated its intention to convert its whole fleet to hybrids.

In November, a district judge halted New York City’s plan to turn its yellow taxis green by 2012, ruling that regulation of fuel emissions standards fall under federal authority, not the city’s authority
