Verizon Communications has announced new initiatives, standards and an energy management guide that the company will undertake in an effort to save energy in its communications network, Green Technology reports.
The company will be implementing strict standards governing the energy efficiency of new network equipment. It will also test geothermal heating and cooling facilities.
One of the main ways Verizon is able to help its clients conserve energy is through their broadband fiber-to-the home network, which uses only 38 percent of the electric power of copper high-speed Internet.
Last year, Verizon moved more than 3 million customers to paperless billing and saved $8 million in paper and administrative costs. It also saved another $2.7 million by moving its payroll, training and HR systems online.
