GPMGD Eclipses 1,000 MW in Renewables Purchased

Collectively, members of the Green Power Market Development Group have purchased 1,000 megawatts worth of renewable energy over the past nine years, according to a press release.

The group, which was formed in 2000 by the World Resources Institute, aims to purchase renewable energy at rates that are comparable to those of conventional sources.

The chart above shows the relative costs of purchasing a kilowatt of various forms of renewable energy.

To help companies determine how to best adopt renewables, the World Resources Institute recently issued a report, “Harnessing Nature’s Power: Deploying and Financing On-Site Renewable Power.”

The report includes a list of federal incentives for purchasing renewables, maps that show the potential for adding wind and solar generation,  state metering regulations, as well as case studies on how to reduce costs with renewable energy.

Members of the Green Power Market Development Group are:

  • Alcoa Inc.
  • Dow Chemical
  • DuPont
  • FedEx
  • General Motors
  • Georgia-Pacific
  • Google
  • IBM
  • Interface Inc.
  • Johnson & Johnson
  • Michelin
  • Natureworks LLC
  • Pitney Bowes Inc.
  • Staples
  • Starbucks

In 2008, 14 California companies formed a California affiliate network of The Green Power Group to share best practices for purchasing and developing renewable energy.
