Boston-Power Gets Into Lithium-ion Car Battery Market

boston-battery21Boston-Power, known for its lithium-ion battery packs used in Hewlett-Packard laptops, is making a play for the automotive lithium-ion battery market.

Westborough, Mass.-based Boston-Power plans to build a 455,000 square-foot battery manufacturing plant in Auburn, Mass.

The project is reliant on $100 million in federal stimulus funds, along with $9 million from Massachussets.

Boston-Power also has introduced Swing, which it calls the first eco-certified battery for plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles.

According to a press release, the battery has more energy density, is lighter and has a longer life than other battery options, making it a more sustainable option.

Boston-Power’s moves come at the right time in the economy, said Ian Bowles, secretary of the state’s Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

“These types of batteries are generally believed to be the key step for plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles,” Bowles said, reports the Boston Globe. “It’s a natural strength for us, and there’s a very large market opening up for these types of products right now.”
