greenheart2Following a trend by other cell phone manufacturers to market next-generation cell phones that are more energy efficient and made of recycled content, Sony-Ericsson has come out with two models under the GreenHeart label.

Sony-Ericsson is using fewer hazardous materials in manufacturing the new C901 GreenHeart and Naite, along with the MH300 GreenHeart headset, according to DailyMobile.

To reduce packaging and paper use, the C901 GreenHeart has an electronic, in-phone manual, a feature the company says saves 90 percent in paper usage, as well as giving the product more compact packaging, which saves CO2 emissions during shipping.

The phone’s casing is at least 50 percent made of recycled plastics and it features an optimised display light sensor that uses less energy. The phone’s coloring process  reduces consumer exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOC). The phone comes with the MH300 GreenHeart headset, which uses 100 percent recycled plastics in four of the five hard plastic parts.

The Naite phone features a low-power charger that helps decrease the overall lifecycle CO2 footprint of the phone by 15 percent.

In addition to sustainable and energy efficient manufacturing and product aspects, the phones help consumers adopt more “green” into their daily lives.

The C901 GreenHeart includes a WalkMate application, essentially a pedometer that lets users compare the steps they take with the environmental impact of using a car instead. The Naite has a similar carbon footprint calculator, plus an Ecomate application to help users make greener choices in their daily lives.

Ericsson has stated it wants to reduce each subscriber’s carbon footprint 40 percent by 2013.

Other cell phone manufacturers have been adding more sustainable phone choices.

For instance, Sharp has added a solar cell phone.

Sprint has added a stand-alone solar cell phone charger.

Sprint and Sony have made consumer recycling of cell phones a priority.
