$100M Lighting Retrofits Could Save $350M at Hospitals

hospital2LED Saving Solutions is offering $100 million in LED lighting retrofits at zero out-of-pocket expense to over 100 hospitals and major hospital groups across the United States, reports GreenandSave.com. The company will only get paid based on a portion of the savings generated each month.

Through partnerships with more than seven major manufacturers, LED Saving Solutions is able to offer the $100 million LED lighting incentive. This offer extends to the first 100 hospitals that request up to $1 million in state-of-the-art lighting at zero out-of-pocket expense, which includes a free lighting energy audit and free retrofit bulb installation, according to the article.

Because hospitals typically operate 24 hours per day every day, about 50 percent or more of their energy consumption comes from lighting as compared with other commercial buildings, according to LED Saving Solutions. The company calculates that a single participating hospital could save about $3.5 million, and collectively, 100 hospitals could save more than $350 million over the next seven years.

Other savings will come from tax incentives and reduced maintenance costs by switching out the bulbs, according to the LED solution provider. The company estimates that based on a reduction of 10 lbs of CO2 emissions for $1 saved in electricity, the environmental benefit of saving $350 million in electric costs is equal to 3.5 billion lbs of greenhouse gases.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently launched the Hospital Energy Alliance (HEA) to help drive energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the healthcare sector.

As a sector, hospitals and health care facilities account for a disproportionate amount of energy use and emissions. Hospitals use about 2.5 times the amount of energy as a similar-sized commercial building.

A lighting evaluation is one of five steps for a hospital to become Energy Star rated.
