Chamber of Commerce: Put Climate Change Science on Trial

citysmogIn an attempt to stop potentially sweeping federal emissions regulations, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce wants the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to hold a public hearing on the scientific evidence for man-made climate change, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Chamber officials say it would be “the Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century,” which would rule on whether humans are causing dangerous levels of global warming, reports the newspaper.

EPA spokesman Brendan Gilfillan said in the article the agency based its proposed finding that global warming is a danger to public health on peer-reviewed science, which indicates that climate change is a danger to humans.

If the chamber’s request is denied, it will take the fight to federal court, which the EPA says would be frivolous, reports the LA Times.

The EPA is set to formally declare that the heat-trapping gases blamed for climate change endanger human health, which will enable the EPA to regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the Clean Air Act, reports the LA Times. Click here for the U.S. Chamber’s petition.

The EPA endangerment finding, proposed in April, has resulted in more than 300,000 public comments, of which many question scientists’ projections that rising temperatures will lead to increased mortality rates, harmful pollution and extreme weather events such as flooding, drought and greater sea level rise, according to the LA Times.

  1. The U.S. Chamber purportedly represents 3 million US businesses, 96% of which are “small businesses”. However, their position on climate change does not reflect their 3 million constituents. It reflects only the group of four individuals who set the Chamber’s possibly on climate change. Just who are these four individuals? Well, they are not what come to mind when we think of the “small business” Chamber… They are four BILLION-DOLLAR companies who want no limits on CO2 emissions. More specifically, they are the coal industry (Massey, Peabody and CONSOL) and also a shipping company. Don’t be fooled! This is not your neighbor’s Chamber speaking. The community bank, local diner, downtown hardware store and barber shop are NOT the ones challenging climate science. The COAL INDUSTRY is, and the CEO of Massey, Don Blankenship, refers to anyone who believes in the mountains of peer reviewed, vetted climate science as: “atheists and communists”. I put my trust in NASA, the National Academies of Science (of the US, Britain, France, Russia, Germany, China, Japan, Brazil, Italy, India, Etc.), the IPCC and the hundreds of other credible organizations seeking to protect our world, and the not the money grubbing Blankenship. Perhaps the U.S. Chamber should change its name to Blankenship’s Chamber of Commerce. At least that would be more honest…
