Climate Change Protests Rally Against ‘Green Posturing’

newscotlandyardProtests in London will accuse financial institutions, corporations and the government of professing to save the environment while allowing the expansion of airports, coal-fired power plants and other sources of emissions, reports Reuters.

About 1,000 people will protest at what they say is “green posturing” by politicians and business executives, targeting 22 organizations, reports Reuters. This is expected to be a test for the London police after they were criticized for their handling of G20 protests in April, according to the news agency.

About 200 extra officers have been called in from across Britain to create a 500-strong force to cover the camp, reports Reuters. At the same time, the force is policing one of Europe’s biggest open-air parties, Notting Hill Carnival, over the weekend.

Scotland Yard’s assistant commissioner Chris Allison told Reuters that it would adopt a “neighborhood style” of policing, but would not rule out a controversial tactic known as kettling, where protesters are corralled and held within a cordon for hours.
