John Wiley & Sons, Inc. has released its first annual Corporate Citizenship Report. The report highlights the publishing company’s development of its global initiative to address environmental, ethical, social and economic challenges, which was developed in collaboration with the Business for Social Responsibility (BSR).
Over the past year, Wiley launched its Corporate Citizenship Web site, developed a Vendor Code of Ethical Conduct, and established distribution and reporting procedures.
Wiley also formalized its global responsible paper sourcing guidelines that favor producers that are recognized by one or more third-party certified sustainable forest management schemes, meet all local environmental laws and regulations, and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to clean and efficient production.
The company also reduced paper consumption by adopting lighter weight papers and reducing waste, migrating more print subscriptions to online license deals, and taking advantage of digital technologies to deliver content online as well as more efficiently in print.
Wiley also adopted a company-wide strategy of carbon emissions measurement and reduction and joined BSR’s Clean Cargo Group to leverage the group’s intermodal CO2 calculator to calculate the carbon emissions of its shipments from printers to distribution centers.
Some of the company’s goals for this year include the promotion of its Vendor Code of Ethical Conduct and monitoring compliance among compositors, printers, binders, freight companies, paper mills, production, and software vendors. The company will also leverage resources such as PREPS (Publishers Database for Responsible Environmental Paper Sourcing) and EPAT (Environmental Paper Assessment Tools) to support sustainable paper choices.
Wiley will also set key performance indicators to measure carbon emissions; complete the shipping data collection for carbon emissions, and develop carbon reduction strategies with measurable targets.
