Retail Industry, Truckers Unite to Reduce Port Emissions

port truckA partnership between the Retail Industry Leadership Association and the Coalition for Responsible Transportation (CRT) aims to slash diesel emissions in and around U.S. ports.

The partnership builds upon previous coalition programs at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, where CRT member companies have put into use about 2,000 newer-model trucks that emit 80 percent fewer pollutants, on average, according to a press release.

These lower-emission trucks have come into service three years ahead of the ports’ own deadlines.

CRT also is extending the effort to ports in Oakland, Seattle, Tacoma, New York and New Jersey.

The Retail Industry Leadership Association and CRT are part of the EPA SmartWay Program. CRT announced a partnership with SmartWay in August.

The Retail Industry Leadership Association holds the further distinction of serving on SmartWay’s Shipper Stakeholder Committee, which provides input toward the continued development of the program, and is a partner with EPA’s Energy Star and WasteWise programs.

The Retail Industry Leadership Association includes more than 200 retailer and affiliated members, representing more than $1.5 trillion in combined annual sales.
