World’s Largest Wind Farm Debuts in Texas

In West Texas, the world’s largest wind farm has opened. The 781.5 megawatt wind farm, situated amongst 100,000 acres of cotton farms in the Panhandle, cost $1 billion to construct.

Located about 220 miles west of Dallas, the installation has 627 wind turbines, which at peak operation can power up to 230,000 homes, according to PaceButler Corp.

With Texas among the leading states for adding wind power, the U.S. gets a solid “B” for its 2008 progress toward reaching the 20 percent of electricity supply from wind energy by 2030, but only a C- grade for its transmission efforts, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).
