Marcegaglia to Install 4-MW Solar Panel System

marcySteel maker Marcegaglia group is partnering with Italy’s biggest renewable energy group Enel Green Power to install a 4-megawatt rooftop solar panel system, reports Reuters. Construction is expected to start this year at a plant in the southern port of Taranto, according to the article.

The roof-top installation, one of the biggest in Italy, will produce 5 million kilowatt hours of power annually, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4,000 tons and would meet the power needs of about 1,900 families, reports Reuters.

The installation will be 51-percent owned by Enel Green Power and 49-percent owned by the Marcegaglia group, according to Reuters.

Photovoltaic installations have increased in Italy since 2007 when the government introduced new incentives, reports Reuters.

According to Enel Green Power, more than 60,000 photovoltaic systems have been installed in Italy thanks to the “Conto Energia incentives,” which totaled more than 900 MW at the end of 2009. It is estimated that capacity will reach 1,200 MW in July 2010, according to the energy company.
