ted turnerTed Turner and Southern Company are working together on a series of renewable energy projects in the Southwest, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Known for his media-empire building and vast herds of buffalo, Turner is an avid environmentalist who just happens to be the largest private landowner in the U.S.

Southern, meanwhile, is one of the largest operators of coal-fired power plants in the U.S.

Both of the titans have Atlanta roots, with Southern based there and Atlanta where Turner built up his media holdings.

The partnership will focus on large-scale solar photovoltaic projects, although other renewable energies are not being discounted.

The projects will be built on some of Turner’s 2 million acres, as well as other sites, according to the article. The Southwest was chosen initially based on ample sunlight and proximity to demand, according to a press release.

According to Southern Company’s most recent CSR report, since 1990 its sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions are down more than 30 percent, while electricity generation has increased more than 40 percent.

In September of 2009, Turner discussed corporate sustainability at the National Energy Summit.
