BNSF Signs Deal for Measuring Energy Efficiency

BNSF trainBNSF Railway has entered a deal to measure, report and reduce its energy costs and usage with LPB Energy Management.

The seven-year contract is geared to helping BNSF get on track with its commitment to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, according to a press release.

Where possible, LPB will see if BNSF’s operations measure up to the EPA’s Energy Star standards.

All of BNSF’s utility invoicing, verification and payment will be funneled through LPB’s Utility Manager software.

The deal also calls for LPB to help with strategic energy procurement.

Patrick Harrison, manager of strategic sourcing at BNSF, said that the deal will help give BNSF an increased awareness of energy consumption, as well as provide a path to reduced carbon emissions.

In other rail news, China is devoting massive amounts of state spending to building a network of fast, energy efficient trains, reports USA Today.

In 2009, China put $88 billion into its railways. It leads the world with 1,758 miles of high-speed tracks.
