Coke Aims for Zero Waste, Zero Carbon Footprint at Winter Olympics

coke olympicsFactoring in energy saving efforts and carbon offsets, Coca-Cola plans to have a net-zero carbon footprint at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The company also is taking steps to limit its waste to net zero.

From selling beverages in the PlantBottle to delivering them via hybrid vehicles and electric carts, Coke is looking at a number of ways to lessen its footprint.

For instance, beverages will be stored in coolers that turn off overnight to save energy.

Additionally, used bottles will be recycled into hats, vests and gloves that will be donated to a homeless shelter after the games.

To offset its significant corporate travel related to the event, Coke is purchasing carbon offsets.

Coke also is sponsoring the Environmental Torch Bearer program, which encourages companies and individuals to make small changes in their energy use and environmental impact.

There may be more in the works.

Katie Bayne, chief marketing officer for Coke, said that the last few Olympics were a “great global footprint” for announcing new technologies and environmental initiatives.

Recently, Coke’s CEO said that he is so into sustainability that he effectively is the company’s chief sustainability officer.

Expect more announcements about the upcoming Olympics and the environment.

For instance, Offsetters Green Technology, a Canadian-based carbon asset management company and supplier of carbon offsets, will offset up to 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at the games.

The company plans to partner with local clean-technology companies including Nexterra, Sempa Power, Lignol Innovations, Ballard Power and Powertech to create and verify the clean-tech offset projects.

  1. I applaud Coke for their goal to have no carbon footprint at the 2010 Winter Olympics. This international event is a great place to educate the world on the importance of environmental sustainability. It also provides Coke with excellent marketing opportunities and the chance to show millions of viewers that Coke is a leader in CSR.

  2. What an excellent opportunity for Coke to display their methods of reducing their footprint, and providing an example. Hopefully many will follow suit.
