Smithfield Foods has named its first ever Chief Sustainability Officer. Meanwhile, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is conducting a search for what it calls a “Chief Greening Officer.”
Smithfield Foods, which markets more than $12 billion in fresh pork and packaged meats a year, has promoted Dennis Treacy to Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs, according to a press release.
Previously, Treacy was Vice President of Environmental and Corporate Affairs at Smithfield, which he joined in 2002. Before that, he was Director of Virginia’s department of environmental quality.
GSA, as part of a reorganization in how it provides services to the rest of the government, is creating a position called the Chief Greening Officer, reports Federal News Radio.
GSA Administrator Martha Johnson said the Chief Greening Officer will “aggressively pursue sustainable practices within GSA’s large portfolio of government-owned and leased buildings to ensure that we are enabled to better meet our mandates.”
The GSA also is moving the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings from the domain of the Public Building Service to the Office of Governmentwide Policy.
The interim Chief Greening Officer will be Scott Conner, who is the director of the Denver Federal Center for GSA’s Rocky Mountain region.
