Kohl’s to Add Solar at 10 Colorado Stores

KohlsSolarMapKohl’s will convert 10 of its 23 Colorado stores to solar power by the end of this year. Each store will install more than 530 solar panels that generate 112 kW, supplying approximately 15 percent of each store’s energy.

Solar installations are currently complete or underway at four Kohl’s stores, with six additional locations in the planning phase. Together, the solar panels are expected to collectively generate approximately 1.6 million kWh annually, which is the equivalent of powering 153 homes for a year.

Kohl’s launched its solar program in California in 2007 at its Laguna Niguel store. The company currently has 86 solar locations nationwide in California, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon and Wisconsin with the near-term goal of reaching 100 locations in the upcoming months. Energy efficiency is a key focus for Kohl’s. The company has more than 450 Energy Star-labeled stores and is a 2010 EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year

Kohl’s is also an EPA 2009 Green Power Partner of the Year, purchasing enough green power to meet 100 percent of its purchased electricity companywide.

The company also installs central energy management systems at all stores that operate most of the interior and exterior lighting, and heating and cooling systems.
