Target Lights Up Savings With LED Retrofit at 500 Stores

target ledTarget expects to save nearly 16 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year by upgrading display case lighting to LEDs at about 500 stores.

Target has already upgraded displays cases in 150 stores and an additional 350 are projected for 2010, according to a press release.

Just last week, Target announced it was putting recycling bins in all its stores.

The new LED systems will be installed in all new stores going forward, reports Supermarket News.

Target expects that the LED lighting systems, which are being installed by GE, will results in a reduction of display case energy use to about 10.7 million kWh a year, down from 26.6 million kWh now.

The retailer is switching from 73 watt fluorescent lamps to 29 watt LEDs.

Target also is installing motion activated occupancy sensors for the display cases, which may generate additional savings.

Other retailers are seeing the value in switching to LED lighting.

For instance, the SuperMax supermarket chain in Puerto Rico expects to save $170,000 a year because of lighting upgrades.
