Ford Highlights Volunteer Efforts

Ford Motor Company highlighted its volunteer efforts Friday with the announcementthat 600 company employees and retirees would spend the day working on water conservation projects in the Detroit area, supported by $60,000 in mini-grants. The activities were to include habitat restoration at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, creating storm water filtration systems in Grosse Ile, and building nature trails in Farmington Hills.

Several major corporations have been spotlighting their environmental volunteer work lately, often in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Last month, over 1000 volunteers from Pacific Gas & Electric Company volunteered to help restore 10 California state parks, alongside a $200,000 donation from the company to fund additional restoration efforts.

Meanwhile, almost 90 Yamaha Motor Corp. USA employees volunteered to help reforest San Bernadino National Forest by planting 2,250 trees in areas devastated by the 2003 and 2007 forest fires. Sempra Energy Corp. recently donated $50,000 to aid in the restoration of the forest.

Ernst & Young has publicized its environmental efforts in Costa Rica, where it recently sent 16 employees on volunteer expeditions in cooperation with the Earthwatch Institute to advise local coffee harvesters on sustainability measures by conducting field studies, collecting samples and helping researchers analyze coffee crop data.
