Home Depot, Macy’s, Wal-Mart Try FutureMark Recycled Paper

Home Depot, Macy’s, Walmart, Whole Foods and American Eagle Airlines’ in-flight magazine “Latitudes” have signed contracts in the first half of 2010 with FutureMark Paper Company, which says it is the only North American manufacturer capable of producing up to 100% recycled coated paper for magazines and catalogs.  FutureMark also secured new orders from existing customers including Scholastic and Staples.

FutureMark has the capacity to produce 150,000 tons of recycled paper every year, according to a recent article from The Daily Green, and mostly supplies paper to big companies and publications, like Rachael Ray magazine, which has an annual circulation of 15 million copies. Campbell’s, General Mills, Outside magazine and Taste of Home magazine are some other FutureMark customers.

According to The Daily Green:

Organizations have surfaced to green the magazine industry, like the Institute for Sustainable Communication, which focuses on developing socially and environmentally healthy forms of communication, and Green America Better Paper Project, which offers a resource for publishers, retailers, printers, advertisers and consumers to help them reduce the environmental impact of paper.

FutureMark says it has experienced rapid customer growth following its launch as FutureMark Paper Company late last year, underscoring the increasing U.S. adoption of environmental paper among today’s eco-conscious companies.

The company recently began using an environmentally sustainable binding compound made from corn starch in its paper coatings instead of petroleum-based latex and developed a product that reuses the short paper fibers, inks and coating minerals extracted from recycled paper as a soil nutrient.
