1E Upgrades PC Power Management Software

1E has released version 6.0 of its enterprise-class PC power management solution, NightWatchman, which helps businesses identify and reduce power consumption in IT equipment and software.

The desktop power management solution enables businesses to remotely and centrally manage their organizations’ personal computer systems. They can significantly lower energy costs without impacting user productivity by powering down computers remotely and automatically overnight and at weekends, which reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions, says IE.

NightWatchman 6.0 includes:

–Enterprise view web-based dashboard: Designed for senior managers, the new dashboard provides a high-level view of power use and savings at-a-glance. It is fully configurable, with tiles available for NightWatchman, WakeUp and NightWatchman Server Edition.

–Location-based tariffs: NightWatchman Management Center uses energy tariffs specific to geographical location and energy provider. It also provides energy consumption calculations specific to the exact make and model of a machine.

–Enhanced sleepless client detection: Built-in intelligence ensures that PCs are being power managed when not in use.

“PCs and peripherals consume more energy than any other ICT group. Buying more energy-efficient PCs is a good start, but the most substantial reductions in energy consumption result from transferring the PC to lower power states when they’re not in use,” said Terrence Cosgrove, principal research analyst, Gartner, in a statement. “Therefore, we believe that by 2012, more than 50 percent. of midsize and large organizations will centrally manage desktop power states,” he added.

Since its launch, NightWatchman has cumulatively saved its customers $530 million in energy savings, which represents savings of 5.6 million megawatts of electricity or 4 million metric tons of CO2 emissions, according to 1E.

As an example, Ford Motor Company’s new PC Power Management program using 1E’s NightWatchman is expected to save the automaker $1.2 million and reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 16,000 to 25,000 metric tons annually.

In another case, HSBC reduced its energy costs by $1 million and energy use by 7,267,865 kWh by implementing a companywide initiative to increase IT efficiency across more than 300,000 PCs in 8,000 global offices. The company achieved these savings by installing two 1E software applications — NightWatchman and Nomad.
