The U.S. Corporate Recycling market is projected to reach $47.1 billion in 2010 and grow to $79.1 billion in 2015, according to the latest issue of EL Insights. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 10.9% during this time period.
As America’s desire for convenient and disposable products has grown, so has its waste. On average, Americans dispose of 4.6 pounds of trash a day per person as compared to 2.8 pounds in 1960. This accumulates to a startling 64 tons of waste over the average American lifespan.
As communities become increasingly aware of the environmental and health detriments a landfill can impose, they are declining to issue permits. Jon D. Johnston, an official with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), stated, “Nobody wants a landfill sited anywhere near them, including in rural areas.”
Recycling has long been championed as a way to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfills.
