Stop & Shop owner Ahold USA is deploying EnerNOC’s EfficiencySMART Insight platform to reduce energy usage and spending across 630 stores.

The system will use real-time data from Ahold’s supermarkets throughout New England and the mid-Atlantic, which include not just Stop & Shop but also Giant Food of Maryland and Giant/Martin’s grocery stores. Dutch-based Ahold also owns Peapod, an online grocer.

“Ahold USA has worked with EnerNOC since 2005, and during that time we have gained a much clearer view of our energy usage on a site-by-site basis,” said Paul Grenier, manager of energy at Ahold USA. “EfficiencySMART Insight allows us to take those lessons to the next level by helping us compare usage across stores, identify leaders, and share best practices across all our locations.”

EnerNOC says that EfficiencySMART Insight enables companies to rapidly identify and harvest a range of low and no-cost energy savings opportunities previously hidden from view, reduce energy spikes and related demand charges, optimize energy efficiency investments and strategy, and enhance measurement and verification of ongoing and future energy efficiency projects.

The platform allows companies to disseminate real-time alerts and alarms to individual store managers, helping to ensure that potential inefficiencies like inactivated night setbacks are identified quickly to minimize waste.

“We expect EfficiencySMART Insight deployments to save supermarkets five percent annually on their energy bills, and there are nearly 36,000 supermarkets in the United States alone that can reap those rewards,” said Tim Healy, chairman and CEO of EnerNOC.

EfficiencySMART Insight is part of the EfficiencySMART suite of applications and services. The portfolio also includes EfficiencySMART Commissioning, which is designed to deliver data-driven persistent commissioning, and EfficiencySMART Services, which offers energy engineering, strategic planning, and project design.
