Flagship Lord & Taylor to be 100% Wind-Powered

Lord & Taylor is buying 100 percent wind power for two New York stores, an initiative that is says will move it into the top 20 buyers of renewable energy in U.S. retail.

The retailer has signed a two-year contract with Green Mountain Energy, beginning in November, to buy more than 13 million kWh of wind-based renewable energy certificates (RECs) a year for the company’s flagship store on New York’s Fifth Avenue (pictured), as well as a store in Eastchester, N.Y. Lord & Taylor’s clean energy purchase for the stores will avoid a total of more than 20 million pounds of carbon dioxide a year, Green Mountain says.

The purchase exceeds the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership, which Lord & Taylor recent joined.  Based on EPA’s current Top Partner rankings, the company would rank No. 17 on the Top 20 Retail list, representing the largest purchasers among retail partners within the Green Power Partnership.

Lord & Taylor awarded the contract to Green Mountain after a bid process facilitated by energy consulting firm Good Energy.
