You can see Marines at Camp Pendleton training on a solar-powered ExFOB (Experimental Forward Operating Base) in segment 8, “Khaki goes Green”, of the PBS special, EARTH: The Operators’ Manual, at: http://earththeoperatorsmanual.com/segment/8 And hear the rationale for taking fuel and water convoys off the road, and so avoiding IED threats.

    The program re-airs nationally August 24th at 10pm (check local listings).

    In Afghanistan, the Marine’s ExFOB saved 80% of fuel used in heating and air conditioning.
