Through the EcoAd program, CBS subsidiary EcoMedia sells advertising and redirects a portion of the profits to environmentally friendly projects in communities across the country.
EcoMedia has also added a number of environmental and community groups to its list of partners and supporters. These supporters and partners include Environment California, Environment Now, One Atmosphere, Luminalt, Santa Monica Baykeepers, Solar Schools Initiative, Energy Independence Now, The Better World Group, the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, The Climate Group and the Foundation for Environmental Education.
Chevrolet, Safeway and PG&E were among the first advertisers to run spots with the EcoAd stamp, which debuted in January.
In April, it emerged that CBS was the target of a formal complaint to the Federal Trade Commission that accused the EcoAd program of “greenwash”.
Environmental groups Friends of the Earth, the Rainforest Action Network and Center for Environmental Health, along with news website Ecopreneurist, alleged that EcoAd violates federal laws and the FTC’s Green Guides for environmental advertising claims.
