Compliance & Standards Briefing: WEEE, Biodiesel, RoHS, Coal and Coke

The Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance and member companies in three states on Monday announced that the for the first time retail locations will post sustainability grades for biodiesel, according to a report.  The SBA’s Sustainability Report Card ranks biodiesel on several criteria, including feedstock type, feedstock origin, how the fuel was produced and how far it travelled to point of sale.

The European Commission has rejected proposals from many member states to revise the planned changes to the 2003 waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) directive, according to news reports.  The commission recently published a paper refusing to grant more to time to member states to achieve the target of collecting 65 percent of the average market weight of electronic and electrical equipment placed on their national markets.

A proposed new standard for determining the total amount of fluorine and chlorine in coal and coke is being developed, ASTM International announced.  The Subcommittee D05.29 on Major Elements in Ash and Trace Elements of Coal invites participation from government and industry.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) will partner to oversee an independent,  joint accreditation program for credit and non-credit energy efficiency and renewable energy certificate programs in educational and other institutions, the two entities announced.  ANSI and IREC signed a memorandum of understanding, and will receive advisory support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

A Georgia company has  developed a new X-ray capability to detect poor quality electronic parts that it said will assist companies in complying with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) standards enforced by the European Union,  according to UPI.  World Micro Components said its X-Ray Fluorescence tabletop analyzer and high-speed X-ray inspection equipment makes it easier to detect deviations from specifications.  RoHS requires companies to produce test reports for certain electronic parts.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) has opened a new LEED-certified ship operation facility called Marine Operations Center-Pacific, in Newport, Ore., according to a news report.  The center, which moved from Seattle, will serve as homeport for up to four research and survey ships.

NSF International has certified several polypropylene color concentrates manufactured by the Plastics Color Corporation, of Calumet City, Ill., for use in kitchen appliances, according to a report.  The materials meet all requirements of 21 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) for additives that come into contact with food and NSF/ANSI Standard 51: Food Equipment Materials for materials used in commercial food equipment.

Third-party testing by UL Environment supports BASF’s environmental and sustainability claims for its Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) insulation products used in the building and construction industry, the company announced Monday.

Earth Science Information Systems’ ESdat database now includes a library of regulatory environmental standards, the company announced.  The company said that the new software enables users to quickly perform environmental regulatory compliance checks against local, national, or international environmental standards.
