GNC Stores Switch to LED, Expect One to Two-Year Payback

General Nutrition Centers has installed energy efficient Lighting Science Group LED bulbs at its corporate-owned locations across the U.S.

The Energy Star-qualified LED bulbs now lighting GNC retail display shelves are about 80 percent more efficient than the halogen bulbs they replace, are fully dimmable and have about 50 percent more light output than competing products, GNC says.

As well as enjoying lower energy bills, GNC says stores will save money on maintenance and cooling costs as the new bulbs will last 50,000 hours and give off very little heat compared to the halogen bulbs that they replace. As such, GNC estimates that the lighting upgrade will pay for itself in one to two years.

“Lighting is the low-hanging fruit in reducing energy consumption: it accounts for 22 percent of the United States’ energy use and up to 60 percent of the power used in commercial buildings,” said Jim Haworth, chairman and chief executive officer of Lighting Science Group.
