Kryptonite Cuts Plastic in Packaging, Reduces Costs

Bicycle lock brand Kryptonite has introduced new packaging that replaces commonly used hard plastic shells with a more environmentally friendly alternative.

The new packaging (on right side of picture) creates significantly less waste and cuts use of shipping resources compared to the outgoing design (on left side of picture), according to Kryptonite manufacturer Ingersoll Rand. Changes to the packaging occurred after an unnamed large retail chain asked IR to place the locks in greener packaging.

According to IR, this large retail chain devotes significant resources, time and training to helping their vendors reduce carbon footprints and create more sustainable packaging.

The environmental benefits of the new packaging include:

  • Changed from a full plastic casing to a package of 90 percent cardboard, 10 percent PETG plastic
  • Reduced the number of zip ties used
  • Weighs less, reducing freight needs

The packaging changes have also proven economically sound. Kryptonite says that the alterations helped offset a possible 8-10 percent inflationary cost increase that hit the company this year related to labor, materials and freight.
