L’Oréal Plans Second N.J. Solar Array

L’Oréal USA has announced that its Franklin, N.J. manufacturing facility is partnering with GeoPeak Energy in a power purchase agreement to install a 1 MW photovoltaic solar system at the plant.

Once operational, the first phase of the roof-mounted photovoltaic solar energy system is projected to provide 12 percent of the plant’s (pictured) annual electrical power requirements. In addition to the solar installation, the plant has contracted with GeoPeak Energy to procure additional carbon credits, thereby allowing the facility to reduce carbon dioxide by 1,200 metric tons per year.

The Franklin manufacturing site expansion was awarded LEED Gold certification in December 2010. The 310,000 square foot facility, which produces more than 205 million units of L’Oréal Paris Skincare and Cosmetics, Maybelline and Garnier Skincare products annually, has already implemented many other energy efficiency and conservation programs.

Since 2005, the plant has reduced water usage by 48 percent (over 3 million liters reduced per year), transportable waste by 42 percent (over 700 tons per year), and CO2 emissions by 30 percent (1,855 tons per year).

This is L’Oréal’s second solar facility in the U.S. In June, L’Oréal announced the planned installation of a 1.4 megawatt solar array on the roof of its Piscataway, N.J. manufacturing facility.

The company also uses solar technology in its manufacturing and distribution plants in India, Spain, Mexico and China. Twenty percent of the company’s electricity used globally last year was from renewable sources, L’Oréal says.
