Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market and REC Solar, a provider of home and commercial solar electric systems, have unveiled 11 rooftop solar installations in Phoenix and Los Angeles. The systems will produce 746,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity a year to meet about 20 percent of the stores’ energy production needs.

Boston-based Cathartes Private Investments is to build Massachusetts’ largest privately-owned solar power plant on 22 acres of industrial land in Westford, Mass. Cathartes will partner with solar developer Nexamp for the project. Construction will begin this fall on the 4.5 MW solar panel field, which Nexamp says will produce enough electricity to power more than 600 homes.

Envision Solar International Inc. has started work on 15 vehicle charging-enabled Solar Tree structures (pictured) for an as yet unnamed “major U.S. government entity” in San Diego. The project, which uses the EnvisionTrak tracking system, will generate over $800,000 of revenue for the company and should be completed in Q4 of 2011.

Massachusetts-based Purpose Energy has developed a way for breweries to turn their waste into energy. The company, with the slogan “Saving the Earth. One beer at a time,” is working with the Magic Hat Brewing Company in Burlington, Vt., to convert spent yeast, grains and wastewater into a biogas that goes back into the brewery as energy.
