Bush Brothers, Dairyland Partner on Wastewater Energy Plant

Dairyland Power Partners plans to to buy electricity created by an anaerobic wastewater system at a Bush Brothers & Co. plant in Augusta, Wis.

The digester plant processes biogas produced in a covered lagoon to power a 635 kW generator.

It should produce enough renewable energy to power nearly 500 homes, according to Dairyland.

The Bush Brothers facility, which should be operational in early 2012, will represent the seventh methane digester within the Dairyland system, and the first industrial use of such a system by the energy firm. Dairyland’s first six digester facilities are “cow power” plants, that use dairy cow manure to make methane gas.

In other news, ultra violet disinfection specialist Berson is using its medium pressure UV system to treat wastewater in a trial in a Dutch hospital.

In the trial, UV is applied in combination with hydrogen peroxide to generate highly reactive chemicals in what Berson calls an “advanced oxidation process.” the chemicals attack the pharmaceutical residues in the wastewater, breaking them down into water, carbon dioxide and harmless metabolites, Berson says.

Like all hospitals, the wastewater from the Isala Hospital in Zwolle, the Netherlands, contains elevated levels of X-ray contrast compounds and various other pharmaceutical residues, according to Berson.
