Environmental & Energy Executive Moves: PPG, Mainstream, AECOM, PwC, Oracle, Viridity, Itron

PPG Industries: The maker of paints, coatings, chemicals and specialty materials appointed Diane Kappas (pictured, far left) vice president of environment, health and safety. Kappas is business director for PPG’s TESLIN product line, in the silicas business. She succeeds John Richter (pictured near left), who has been named vice president, operations, coatings, Asia/Pacific, at PPG’s China headquarters in Shanghai.

Mainstream Energy: Lee Johnson has been named as chief executive officer and president. Johnson will have direct responsibility for all operations at Mainstream Energy and its subsidiaries REC Solar and AEE Solar. He joins after 18 years with the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group, and was most recently at Collaboration Consulting.

AECOM: The engineering consultancy has named Susan Leal as chief strategy officer and senior vice president for water in the Americas. Leal recently completed two years as a senior fellow of Harvard University’s Advanced Leadership Initiative, during which she co-authored the book Running Out of Water (Palgrave Macmillan).

PricewaterhouseCoopers: The consultancy has named Andrew Winston as an independent sustainability advisor. Winston is the best-selling author of Green to Gold and Green Recovery and a consultant to large corporations including Bank of America, Bayer, HP, Pepsi, Boeing and Ikea.

Oracle: Rodger Smith has joined as senior vice president and general manager for the Oracle Tax and Utilities Global Business Unit. Smith is the former president of Enterprise Management Solutions (EMS), the management consulting division of Black & Veatch.

Black & Veatch: The engineering, construction and consulting company has appointed Jeff Berk as vice president and senior client account manager in its global water business.

Viridity: The smart grid software company has hired Frank D. Reinhart, Jr. to be vice president of national account sales and Adje Mensah as director of product management. Reinhart is a former vice president of strategic sales at Direct Energy Business, and Mensah is the co-founder of Petra Solar.

Tangent Energy Solutions: The provider of on-site clean energy generation for commercial and industrial customers has named Bruce Sher as vice president of business development. Sher was senior vice president of business development at Viridity Energy.

Green Automotive: The electric vehicle importer and distributor announced that Ben Rainwater will re-join the board of directors and lead wholly-owned subsidiary GAC Automotive Services. Most recently, Rainwater served as vice president, National Parts & Service Division, and director for Daewoo Motor America.

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP: David Burton has joined as a partner in the firm’s tax and project finance and renewable energy practices. He was previously managing director and senior tax counsel at GE Energy Financial Services.

E2America: The maker of building control systems announced that Tom Looney has joined its Industry Advisory Board. Looney is a former executive with Microsoft, Oracle, Active Software and NeXT Inc.

Itron: The smart grid systems provider named LeRoy D. Nosbaum as president and CEO. Nosbaum served as Itron CEO from 2000 to 2009, and chairman from 2002 to 2009. Itron also appointed Barbara Doyle as vice president of investor relations. Doyle was vice president of IR at Lawson Software.

United Water: The utility named Nadine Leslie as president of United Water Environmental Services, the company’s contract services division. Leslie headed United Water’s internal audit department.

Comstock Mining: The Nevada-based gold and silver mining company has appointed Cynthia Byrns as director of environmental and regulatory management. Byrns worked most recently with Olin Corporation for its Chlor Alkali Products Division.

Mission NewEnergy Limited: The biofuel provider named Patrick O’Brien to its advisory board. O’Brien is a retired senior US Department of Agriculture director and Presidential Commission economist.

Center for Social Value Creation: The center at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business named six business leaders to form its advisory board. They are chair Stanley Litow, vice president, Citizenship & Corporate Affairs and president, IBM International Foundation; John Chickering, vice president, Fidelity Investments; Lisa Hall, president and CEO, the Calvert Foundation; Robert Kashan, founder and CEO, EarthColor Inc.; Alan Webber, co-founder, Fast Company and former managing editor and editorial director of the Harvard Business Review; and Dennis Wraase, former CEO and chairman, Pepco Holdings.

OZZ Clean Energy: The provider of solar, natural gas and electricity solutions named Stanley H. Hartt to its board. Hartt is the Chairman of Macquarie Capital Markets Canada Ltd.

AES Corporation: The power company announced that president and chief executive officer Paul Hanrahan will step down September 30, transitioning his management and board responsibilities to the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Andrés Gluski.

Alterra Power: The renewable energy project developer is splitting the roles of chairman and CEO, both of which had been held by Ross Beaty. Beaty will remain executive chairman, and executive vice president John Carson will become CEO.

FlexEnergy: The venture to create clean energy from greenhouse gases announced that Brad Hancock as joined as director of federal programs. Hancock was division head of the programs and projects division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Energy Office.

Biorem: The manufacturer of air emissions control systems announced that the employment of chief financial officer Robert Wood has been terminated, effective immediately.

California Independent System Operator: The ISO appointed Eric Schmitt as vice president of operations, filling the seat held by recently appointed president and CEO Steve Berberich. Schmitt is senior vice president at Science Applications International Corporation.
