Marriott Mumbai Taps Nalco for Water Reduction

The 583-room Marriott Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre and Marriott Executive Apartments has used Nalco products to help reduce water use in its cooling systems by 16 million gallons per year.

The 5-star hotel (pictured) now uses Nalco 3D Trasar Technology for Cooling Water to monitor and control hardware and software within the hotel’s cooling system. Along with the reduction in water use, the refit lowered the hotel’s energy use and wastewater discharge.

The project in Mumbai is part of a Marriott program to save 450 million gallons of water over three years by using Nalco monitoring equipment in hotels worldwide. Marriott aims to reduce its energy and water consumption by 25 percent per available room by 2017.

Last month, a group of 12 international hotel companies, including Marriott, announced a plan to create a single, industry-wide methodology for calculating carbon footprints and emissions.

Currently, carbon measurement metrics vary widely within the hotel trade. The group hopes to have an agreed set of standards ready by 2012.

Other hotel chains involved in the working group are Accor, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Hilton, Hyatt, InterContinental Hotels Group, MGM Resorts International, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., Premier Inn – Whitbread Group and Wyndham Worldwide.
