University of Michigan to Pump $14m Into Green Measures

The University of Michigan (pictured) is to invest $14 million in green initiatives as it aims to meet a host of environmental goals by 2025.

The green targets include cutting its greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent and decreasing the carbon output of its fleet by 30 percent.

To achieve these goals the school is purchasing 37 hybrid vehicles – including seven hybrid buses – and installing a solar array on its North campus. A new golf center is to be heated and cooled by geothermal technology, the university says.

The school is also more than doubling its commitment to its “Planet Blue” energy conservation measures that it says already save $4 million annually and cut energy use by an average of 8.3 percent per building.

Other goals the university has set for itself include shrinking the amount of waste it sends to landfill by 40 percent and reducing the amount of chemicals used on school grounds by 40 percent.

U-M is also to source at least 20 percent of food sold on campus from local, sustainable sources. In an effort to cut food waste any of the school’s cafeterias that are renovated will go “tray less.”

Earlier this year, the university announced that it reduced its water usage by 3 percent in fiscal year 2010 – the lowest level used in the past seven years.

The key to the success was the university’s water conservation irrigation system. Installed in 2006 the system reduces the amount of water used on irrigation by 68 percent, the school said.
