Ford, Microsoft Announce Supply Chain Info Drives

Microsoft and Ford have both launched efforts aimed at increasing the amount of information available on their vendors’ commitments to social and environmental policies.

Starting in 2013, the software giant will require a cross section of its suppliers to provide reports on their adherence to the requirements listed in the existing Microsoft Vendor Code of Conduct. At the same time it will begin including a summary of information from the vendor reports in its annual Citizenship Report.

Meanwhile, Ford has announced that it has more than tripled the size of its program aimed at understanding and measuring its suppliers’ carbon footprint.

The company is surveying the energy use and carbon emissions of 128 global suppliers, accounting for nearly 60 percent of the company’s $65 billion in annual purchases.

This group is an expansion of last year’s survey, which included 35 of Ford’s top suppliers. It includes companies that supply vehicle production parts and components, information technology and logistics services, Ford says.

In July, Ford announced that it and supplier Recycled Polymeric Materials had found a way to combine discarded tires with bio-renewable content and make environmentally friendly seals and gaskets for the auto giant’s vehicles. In April, the automaker announced that it had turned nearly 4.1 million pounds of carpet into cylinder head covers with the help of two of its suppliers.
