Standards & Compliance Briefing: Power Efficiency Standard, Dow Solar Certifications, NSF/ANSI 350

The Storage Networking Industry Association announced on Monday the release of a specification for measuring data storage systems for power efficiency, ZDNet reported. After three years of developing measurement methods, the Emerald Power Efficiency measurement specification can be downloaded free of charge and tests both idle states and active states.

Dow Chemical Co. announced on Monday that its Powerhouse Solar Shingles have received seven certifications including three UL safety certifications for the solar module, fire, and uplift resistance, building code certification from the International Code Council Evaluation Service, International Electrotechnical Commission performance certification, California Energy Commission List of Eligible Equipment certification, and performance certification of ASTM wind uplift resistance.

US Hybrid has announced that its fuel cell power converter modules has received both UL and NEBS certifications. The power converter modules passed a series of tests to become certified under the applicable sections of IEC/UL 60950-1/CSA 60950-1-03/EN60950-1 and NEBS GR-1089-CORE.

Waste Management and 3E Co. announced on Tuesday that it has recently released a joint Retail Hazardous Waste Compliance Solutions program that determine which products are hazardous and offers instructions for their handling, labeling and disposal. The companies said the program can be run by employees at every level of operations and provides 24-hour customer service.

Bio-Microbics, Inc., a manufacturer of wastewater treatment technologies, announced that it has become the first company to earn NSF/ANSI 350 certification for its Bio-Barrier membrane bioreactor.  The company said the system aims to use decentralized treatment technology for water-reuse projects to reduce consumption and effluent discharge. Certification for the standard requires both LEED accreditation and National Association of Home Builders certification for graywater reuse systems.

The 28-story Kaiser Center in Oakland, Calif., has received LEED Gold certification for an Existing Building: Operations and Maintenance, according to an announcement from the building’s developer, The Swig Co. The office building features a reduction in water treatment chemicals and a building-wide lighting control program.

Two universities announced LEED accreditation this week. Utah State University’s new USTAR BioInnovations Center has received LEED Gold certification and Johnson and Wales University’s Grace Welcome Center, built on a former brownfield site in Providence, R.I., also has earned LEED Gold certification for new construction.

Northern Rail, the United Kingdom’s largest train operator, has received ISO 50001 certification, Rail News reported. Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance was the third party auditor.
