A Michelin plant has reduced its energy consumption by about 1,500 MWh through installation of a new cooling tower for process water.

The installation at the Dundee, Scotland plant uses AC drives from Control Techniques, a company of Emerson Industrial Automation, Tyre Express reports. The drives control pump and fan speeds to balance supply with demand.

Emerson says that when idle, the cooling plant consumes no more energy than a tea kettle.

According to Source the Engineer, Michelin realized that the new tower was needed because efficiency improvements in the past few years have reduced demand for cooling water.  The new cooling tower includes two 30 kW cooling fans, three 22 kW pumps to move hot water to the tower and three 90 kW, 4.4 bar pumps to transport chilled water out of the tower.

The Dundee factory manufactures over 7,000,000 car tires a year for export all over the world. It installed two wind turbine generators in 2006.
