Kimberly-Clark, SCE, Prologis Unveil 4.9 MW Solar Array

Kimberly-Clark, utility Southern California Edison and real estate management firm Prologis have installed a 4.9 MW solar array on the roof of the paper products firm’s Redlands, Calif., distribution center.

Expanding a 100 kW array dedicated in 2009, the solar installation now covers 350,000 square feet of roof space.

Its will produce up to 6.6 million kWh of clean energy per year, offset about 4,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually and provide enough electricity to power around 925 average Southern California homes a year, the companies say.

Prologis owns the building, Prologis Park Redlands #5, and managed the construction of the solar facility. The project was designed and financed by SCE, which will own the solar installation and use the power to serve local customers. Kimberly-Clark is the building’s sole tenant and receives power from the original 100 kW solar installation.

Throughout California, SCE and Prologis have worked together to build more than 50 megawatts of solar projects online since 2008.

Announced in March 2008, SCE’s plan is to eventually complete installations generating 250 MW of power on 65 million square feet of roofs across southern California. The $875 million project will eventually be able to power 162,000 homes, SCE says.
