Siemens to Buy eMeter

Siemens Industry Inc. has signed an agreement to acquire all of the stock of smart grid firm eMeter Corporation.

The parties expect to close the deal in December 2011, and will not disclose the terms of the agreement, Siemens says.

San Mateo, Calif.,-based eMeter will become part of the Smart Grid Division of the Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector. It will become Siemens’ center for meter data management and continue to operate out of San Mateo.

The San Mateo firm has the most large-scale deployments in the industry and strategic partnerships with companies such as IBM and SAP, Siemens says. It noted eMeter’s EnergyIP platform as a key factor behind the acquisition.

In August, it emerged that Siemens Energy was installing EnergyIP for Midwest-based WPPI Energy and its member utilities.

Siemens configured, delivered and supported the project implementation at WPPI’s Sun Prairie, Wisc., facility.

Siemens also announced this week a contract extension with Proctor & Gamble that gives the multinational consumer goods company access to product lifecycle software from Siemens subsidiaries.

The contract extends P&G’s access to Siemens PLM Software – a program the consumer goods company has been using since the 1980s – and to Comos, Siemens’ plant engineering lifecycle software.
