Standards & Compliance Briefing: ISO 50001, LEED, CARB, Global Reporting Initiative

Impact Exhibition Management Co., operators of the Impact Arena and Convention Centre in Thailand, is the nation’s first firm to receive ISO 50001 certification for efficient energy management, the Bangkok Post writes. Ahead of applying for ISO 50001, the company found that electricity accounted for 90 percent of its energy usage, and reduced consumption per square meter by more than 10 percent.

United Natural Foods has received LEED gold certification for its Lancaster, Texas, distribution center. The 590,00-square-foot  distribution center was completed in 2010. Its sustainable features include the installation of Energy Star-rated office equipment and appliances for 97 percent of equipment needs, recycling of 75 percent of all construction waste material, and an ammonia-based refrigeration system, the company said.

Staples Promotional Products has earned LEED platinum certification for its St. Louis, Mo., office. The 25,000-square-foot office is a former gear manufacturing factory restored using 90percent of the building’s original shell. Rainwater is captured on the roof for irrigation, natural light reaches 75 percent of work stations, and all installed wood products are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified, the company said.

In Emerson, Maryland, EmersonOne, a 160,000-square-foot class “A” office building owned by Emerson Holdings has earned LEED gold certification, writes CityBiz.com. The building’s sustainable features include a highly-reflective TPO roof, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood used for the project.

BAF, a wholly owned subsidiary of Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has received a CARB (California Air Resources Board) Executive Order (EO) for its 2012 dedicated CNG Ford Transit Connect. The CARB EO allows the Ford Transit Connect to be sold and operated in California, effective immediately. Sixteen other states follow CARB rules. BAF is the first compressed natural gas converter recognized as a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) for gaseous fuel, the company said.

QED Environmental System’s E-Z Tray Air Strippers have been certified by NSF International to NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects. It is the first self-contained air stripper – which removes volatile contaminants from community drinking water supplies – to be certified, the company said.

ASTM D7711, Guide for Description of Polymer Pellet Defects has collected into a standard the terms that are commonly used to describe defects or abnormalities found in different types of polymer pellets, reports the ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics.

Proper application of nitrogen and phosphorus saves producers money and protects and improves ground and surface water, air quality, soil quality and agricultural sustainability, the USDA said.

ProcessMAP’s software, Sustainability Performance Management, applies GRI’s sustainability reporting criteria accurately in its platform, the company said.
