Standards & Compliance Briefing: LEED, CER Carbon Credits, FSC Chain of Custody

Testa Produce’s Chicago-area distribution center has been certified LEED Platinum, making it the first refrigerated food distribution facility in the country to earn the standard. The new 91,300-square-foot distribution center generates a 60-percent savings in energy consumption with features such as a 750kW wind turbine, a partially vegetated roof, solar panels that heat all of the building’s hot water, and a water reclamation and treatment system, the company said.

Johnson County Park & Recreation District’s New Century Fieldhouse, an $8-million renovation of a vacant soccer complex, received LEED Gold certification, and it is the first public recreation center in the Kansas City metro area to receive any level of LEED certification. The building uses 75 percent of the existing metal structure while 2,150 tons of construction waste and demolition debris were diverted from landfills through recycling or salvage, writes the Kansas City Business Journal.

The Wasilla, Alaska, Valley Community for Recycling Solutions has earned LEED Gold certification for its newly built headquarters. The building has 94-percent efficient boilers and super-insulated to minimize heat loss, which together make the building about 48 percent more energy efficiency than a similar building of standard construction, writes the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman.

Pakistan’s largest cement producer Lucky Cement has reduced carbon emissions through the use of a waste heat recovery project for its power generation unit that does use any external fuel but reuses recycled waste heat from the system. Annual CO2 reduction is estimated at approximately 80,000 metric tons at two facilities, and the company has earned CER carbon credits from the UN Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), writes Pakistani financial daily, The Business Reporter.

Saunatec was awarded FSC Chain of Custody certification and will begin producing saunas using FSC-certified lumber. Six Saunatec divisions Amerec, Finnleo, Helo, Tylo, Polar and McCoy will each offer sauna room packages with FSC lumber harvested from responsibly managed forests, the company said.

Recycled porcelain vanities by Glass Recycled have been installed in all bathrooms within the Moffett Towers, a 1.8-million-square foot Class A office, research and development campus in Sunnyvale, California, said Glass Recycled in a statement. The GlassMODE product line uses recycled porcelain products to create bathroom countertops, walls and flooring, and contributed a point to the towers’ LEED certification.

The Interstate Renewable Energy Council’s (IREC’s) Credentialing Program announces a second public comment period till January 18, 2012, for the draft IREC Standard 14732:2012, General Requirements for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certificate Programs. The revised draft standard describes curriculum, administrative, personnel, facilities, and equipment requirements for certificate programs training the energy efficiency/weatherization and renewable energy workforce. IREC is working in partnership with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for joint accreditation to this new standard, the group said.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has announced the approval of ISA-100.11a-2011, “Wireless Systems for Industrial Automation: Process Control and Related Applications,” as an American National Standard. ANSI/ISA-100.11a-2011 received a 92-percent approval vote from committee members, who represent end-user companies where wireless systems will be deployed, the ISA said.
