Ebay Data Center Achieves 1.35 PUE with Green Grid Techniques

Internet auction site Ebay used guidelines set by nonprofit environmental IT consortium Green Grid to help build a modular data center with a power usage effectiveness ratio of 1.35.

The data center in Phoenix, Ariz, recorded the PUE ratio – a measurement trademarked by the Green Grid – over the course of one week in January 2012. The center has a best-case PUE as low as 1.26 for measurements taken in that month, according to a case study released by the Green Grid.

The build, known internally as “Project Mercury,” took the form of a holistic, end-to-end view of data center reorganization in the face of a growing demand for server space, the Green Grid said. Under the initiative, Ebay built an entirely new facility with 1,300 square meters of usable IT space.

The data center incorporates two cooling systems; a traditional cooling loop and a hot water cooling loop. Its modular design means the center can handle up to five generations of future technologies, the Green Grid says.

A report by the Green Grid released in November says that modular and prefabricated data centers now make environmental and economic sense. According to Deploying and Using Containerized/Modular Data Center Facilities, this new modular approach to the construction and deployment of a data centers can be rapidly deployed, has lower operating and capital costs, and can deliver higher density and energy-savings targets than possible with data centers built using traditional methods.
