Harbec Aims for ISO 50001, Carbon Neutrality with Carbon Connect

Harbec, a maker of machine tools and injection-molded plastic parts, is seeking certification under ISO 50001, and has chosen to deploy Carbon Connect carbon accounting application from Epicor, writes Search Manufacturing ERP.

Harbec sees the need to improve its data management to reach ISO 50001, and the company told Search Manufacturing ERP that it expects the new software and the required audit to install it will provide the baseline data that is needed for ISO certification.

According to the company website, Harbec would like to be a carbon neutral company by 2013, saying that after their energy efficiency planning is we’ll take out the same amount somewhere else by purchasing carbon credits towards renewable energy, energy efficiency or from environmental projects like reforestation.

It has already taken a number of steps and seen successful returns on investment. Harbec’s website says that their wind turbine which was installed in December 2002 paid itself in March 2011. A major maintenance overhaul is expected sometime after 2022, but until then the company has very low-cost electricity. The company also has a combined heat and power (CHP) generation system on site.
