Soffe Cuts Lighting Costs 65% with Retrofit

The M.J. Soffe Company, a manufacturer of active apparel, expects to cut lighting costs by 65 percent with an energy efficiency project at its Fayetteville, N.C. headquarters.

The subsidiary of Delta Apparel has engaged Piedmont Service Group to upgrade 2,500 lighting fixtures during the next four months. Piedmont will install LED lights in conference rooms and install occupancy sensors in warehouses. Tax credits from the Energy Policy Act of 2005 may help offset the project costs, Soffe said.

The project will cut Soffe’s overall electricity costs by almost 20 percent and prevent 846 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, the company said. The new fixtures will also lower maintenance costs, improve workplace safety by providing better illumination, and lower overall utility costs by replacing heat-generating lights, Soffe said.

The project will also bring Soffe into compliance with federal lighting efficiency regulations taking effect in the coming years, the company said.

These regulations will be the subject of the next issue of EL Insights, to be published next week.

In other lighting news, solid-state manufacturer Albeo Technologies increased its revenue 50 percent from 2010 to 2011, with sales for retrofit and renovation growing 300 percent. During 2011 Albeo shipped 26,675 fixtures.

Albeo said some of its strongest markets last year were Fortune 500 data centers, cold storage facilities, parking structures, schools and large manufacturing facilities. The company says its motion sensors and other power saving controls help facilities reduce lighting energy use up to 95 percent.
