Enviance and Environmental Leader are hosting a March Madness tournament to determine the university with the best undergraduate programs in environmental studies and sustainability.

The tournament, running at the same time as the NCAA college basketball championship of the same name, will award $5,000 to the environmental and sustainability department of one National Champion, and send the department chair on an all-expenses-paid trip to San Diego to attend the Enviance User Conference, April 16-20. There, the winner will lead a panel titled, “What Tomorrow’s Environmental Leaders Need to Know.”

One student from each of the Final Four universities will be selected by our judges to be profiled in Environmental Leader. There are also multiple opportunities to be featured in the publication throughout the contest.

The top two students from schools advancing to the Final Four will also be awarded netbooks. And, of course, you and your university will have a chance to be recognized nationally as having the best environmental and sustainability college programs in the country.

To be considered for the Sustainable 16, department heads are asked to share program marketing materials and fill out a short survey on their school’s environmental programs. All surveys are due by February 20.

The contest will officially kick off on March 12, when Enviance and Environmental Leader announce their Sustainable 16, the top 16 colleges that will compete for the title of best environmental school in the U.S.

If your university has been selected for the Sustainable 16, you will be notified and asked to share information with students and faculty on how to submit either 300-word essays, or short video testimonials, explaining why your school’s program deserves to be the winner of the tournament. Students and faculty can submit videos and essays from March 9 until their school is eliminated from the competition.

We’ll then narrow the field down to the Environmental 8, on March 23, followed by the Final 4 on March 30, before revealing the winning school on April 2.

A panel of judges, consisting of industry experts, will evaluate your program’s:

• Average freshman retention rate
• Student to faculty ratio
• Graduation rates
• Hire rates post-graduation
• Diversity of courses offered.

Criteria will be calculated on a scale of 1-5, then averaged by judges to determine top schools, and then the winner. If your school has scored high enough to place in the Environmental 8, another score, based on videos and essays submitted by students and faculty, will be factored in to determine the Final Four and overall champion.
