BioMass Packaging has added modular, single-serve cups and lids to its line of compostable food service products.

Greenware cups (pictured) and lids are made entirely from NatureWorks Ingeo biopolymer, a polylactic acid-based material. The range consists of a basic cup, an insert with a secure lid, and either a flat or domed lid that snaps on tight. Cups and inserts are sold in cases of 1,000 units and are available for immediate delivery.

In other sustainable packaging news, packaging company Havi Global Solutions and NextLife, a manufacturer of sustainable plastic resins, have teamed up to produce the first post-consumer recycled resins to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in the restaurant industry.
The approved PCR resins, which include FDA-approved polypropylene, polystyrene and polyethylene blends, can be tailored to specific restaurant chain needs and used to replace virgin resins in the manufacturing of plastic products with food contact, according to Havi. The company says that using recycled plastic resins at highly-trafficked restaurant chains has the potential to save more than 500,000 barrels of oil annually for every 100 million pounds of recycled resin produced.
Havi was one of a host of companies involved in the launch of a forestry initiative in October last year. Other founder members of nonprofit organization GreenBlue’s Forest Products Working Group include Staples, Domtar, Bank of America and Avery Dennison. The initiative aims to find solutions to issues such as climate change, resource efficiency, forest health, and biodiversity.
